Zion, San Francisco hosts 10th Annual EdgeCamp

EdgeCamp (Zion, San Francisco) is a six-week, summer program serving children entering Kindergarten through 8th grade, from 8 AM to 6 PM, Monday to Friday. What began as a vision 10 years ago to provide a Christ-centered summer experience for children has become a beautiful testimony of God’s faithfulness. Through every summer, child, volunteer, counselor, and challenge, God has continued to provide, guide, and open doors.

Approximately 35% of the campers come from Zion School, and some campers and families have been part of EdgeCamp for nine or even 10 years. Some of the campers and families have returned as volunteers and counselors too!

This year’s theme, “God Is Our Hero,” was especially meaningful as they explored the

lives of Noah, Abraham, Joseph, Ruth, David, and Jesus. Their stories are examples of

God’s unwavering faithfulness through every circumstance.

In total, 106 children were served with 20 student volunteers and nine camp counselors. Seeing the campers learn, laugh, build friendships, serve others, and grow in their understanding of God was a tremendous blessing!

Summer Program Director Julie Szeto shared a personal story of receiving God’s faithfulness: 

As the director, I experienced God’s faithfulness in a very personal way this year. My husband, Rev. Lenny Szeto, the sole pastor at Zion Lutheran Church & School, was facing serious health challenges, adding another layer of difficulty during an already demanding season. At times, I felt overwhelmed by the many responsibilities involved in preparing for and directing EdgeCamp—from processing registrations and recruiting volunteers and staff to planning activities and managing finances. During April and May, I became deeply discouraged and even considered stepping away from EdgeCamp. There were moments when I contemplated telling Lenny and the Board that I could no longer continue.

Yet, God met me in that difficult season. Through His strength and peace, as well as the

encouragement and support of family, friends, and those serving alongside me, He gave

me the resilience to continue. This summer tested me in many ways, but it also reminded me that the work belongs to God, and He is the source of our strength.

After 10 years as the director, I am more convinced than ever that God truly is our

“Hero.” I am deeply thankful for the privilege of serving in His ministry and witnessing

His faithfulness year after year.
