As we celebrate the Reformation, we rejoice in the truth that stands at the heart of our faith:
“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God.” — Ephesians 2:8
Our salvation rests entirely in Jesus Christ, crucified for our sins and risen from the dead. This good news
remains the one message that gives forgiveness, life, and eternal hope yesterday, today, and forever.
Across the California-Nevada-Hawaii District, God is opening remarkable doors for that Gospel.
- On the peninsula, a Lutheran congregation that has long worshiped in Cantonese and English recognized a growing Mandarin-speaking community outside its doors. With the installation of a Mandarin-speaking pastor, a new service is growing, and new neighbors are hearing the unchanging Gospel in their heart language.
- In the Central Valley, ministry began around a dining-room table. A Lutheran layperson invited families of Indian descent into his home for food and fellowship. One invitation led to another until nearly 35 people were gathered. The group eventually outgrew the home and moved to the local Lutheran church. Today, that lay leader is preparing for pastoral ministry through the Ethnic Immigrant Institute of Theology.
- In the East Bay, a congregation asked, “What do families in our community need now?” Recognizing a real need for infant care, the congregation remodeled rooms and got state approval to provide infant care, which is becoming a new, fast-growing ministry. Through cribs, classrooms, and caring relationships, families are being welcomed into the life of the church.
- And more than 2,000 miles across the Pacific, a congregation on the island of Oahu is experiencing renewed life. Through a pastor’s faithful presence, listening, and relationship-building in the community, people are coming. Neighbors are now becoming members and sharing the love of Jesus with other local Hawaiians.
These ministries may look different, but their message is the same: Jesus Christ has died. Jesus Christ has
risen. In Him there is forgiveness, life, and salvation.
This work does not happen alone. We do it as brothers and sisters in Christ, as sister congregations, and as
members of the California-Nevada-Hawaii District of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod. Together,
we help proclaim Christ across neighborhoods, cultures, languages, islands, cities, and rural communities.
