Light of the Hills, Cameron Park Meets Community Needs

On the first three Tuesdays of each month at 11:00 AM, volunteers at Light of the Hills, Cameron Park, CA open the doors to the food closet to minister to those in need in El Dorado County. Currently, they are serving about 100 families per week!

While the goal is to offer food to those in need, it is also an opportunity to show God’s love and come alongside those who are struggling. In the process, relationships are formed, conversations and prayer are had and hope is gradually restored. In total, the outreach has about 30 volunteers including some who have received food in the past, shared Karyn Huebner, who helps organize the outreach and handle the paperwork.

On Mondays, volunteers, led by Wayne Ziese and Ted Brown, pack staples from their kitchen into grocery bags. When Tuesday morning comes, a group of six people with their trucks go and pick up the staples and perishable food that range from meat, milk, cheese, butter, eggs and apple juice. Cars line up well before the 11:00 AM start time and after the team has a prayer time, the circuit begins.

Shopping carts are pushed outside, food is delivered and conversations are had with the waiting people. Happy to have the food, the cars drive off and the line moves forward along Rodeo Road and into the church parking lot. Once the carts are unloaded, they are brought back inside and reloaded with the necessary food.

Light of the Hills has been an outlet for around 20 years and shifted to a drive through model during COVID in 2020. The partnership with El Dorado County also includes a donation to the Food Bank from Light of the Hills.

Many who volunteer shared a similar refrain: “This is the best job I’ve ever had.”
