St. Paul Merced Strengthens Church-School Connection Through Kids Takeover Service

ree

St. Paul in Merced is building stronger bridges between church and school by empowering students to lead worship. On Oct. 19, students from preschool through sixth grade took over the planning and execution of Sunday morning service. This was the second such event in the past year.

Since Principal Ruth Sebastian took leadership in Fall 2024, she has worked intentionally to integrate all three ministries: church, school, and preschool. Beyond the Kids Takeover services, students now also take responsibility for an Advent service, creating multiple opportunities throughout the year for young voices to proclaim God's Word.

At this month's service, students did it all. They offered opening and closing prayers, performed Scripture readings from Psalm 103, Mark 1, and Luke 10, sang praise songs, and presented a dramatic interpretation of the Good Samaritan. Guest Pastor Matt Duerr delivered the sermon, teaching that compassion is not just an emotion we feel but an action we take.

The sanctuary was filled with families from the school and congregation, witnessing students lead worship with confidence and joy.

“The children did a wonderful job,” said parent Liz Brittain. “ It’s inspiring to see their faith in God as well as how our community comes together to support our kids and their growth in the Lord.”

By giving children active roles in congregational life, St. Paul is demonstrating that children are part of the church right now, not just a representation of its future.
