St. Mark, Santa Rosa starts Pizza with the Pastor

ree

About a year and a half ago, Pizza with the Pastor was launched as a simple, welcoming gathering for connection and community by Pastor Gary Gerloff at St. Mark, Santa Rosa. The group currently meets in a church conference room on the first Friday of each month. The invitation is straightforward: “If you like pizza and want to hang out with the pastor, come to church this Friday at 6 p.m.”

Typically, around 20 people attend, sharing pizza, salads, and desserts. Beyond being a fun time of fellowship, the event serves as a low-risk, non-threatening entry point for those who may be unchurched or de-churched.

Each gathering begins with prayer and a meal. Once the initial conversation slows, participants introduce themselves and answer a lighthearted question, such as their favorite animal, favorite ice cream flavor, or birth state. After introductions, a deeper question is posed, such as, “If you could go back in time to interview someone, who would it be and why?” These questions are designed to invite authentic conversation, offering space for both “churchy” and non-religious answers so that new guests feel comfortable sharing.

When faith-related answers naturally arise, it gives the opportunity to emphasize Jesus. Over time, several newcomers have become more involved in the church community, with one even preparing for baptism.

Ultimately, Pizza with the Pastor isn’t about the pizza or the pastor. It’s about creating a space where people feel safe, loved, and welcomed into community, and where they can encounter the love of Christ.

As Jesus said in John 13:34–35:

“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another.

By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
