What is a LCMS Recognized Service Organization?

RSOs (Recognized Service Organizations) are non-profits whose vision and values line up with
those of The Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod (LMCS). RSOs reach out to their neighbors in
need with the mercy and love of Christ. From helping the homeless to bringing the Gospel to the
blind, these organizations are shining the light of God’s mercy all over the world.
In the mid-1960s, a need arose for connection among Lutheran non-profits. In 1979, the LCMS
began recognizing these organizations. Today, there are close to 300 RSOs!
What are some examples of RSOs? Organizations like the Lutheran Braille Workers, Lutheran
Social Services of Northern California, Lutheran Hour Ministries, Lutheran Heritage Foundation
and Lutherans for Life show the breadth of impact RSOs have on everyday ministry.
The Synod values RSOs as partners whose community services extend its mission and ministry.
In return, recognized RSOs gain eligibility for several benefits:
● Their called ordained and commissioned ministers can stay on the Synod’s active roster
● They may apply for Lutheran Church Extension Fund loans and LWML grants
● They can join Concordia Plan Services’ insurance and worker benefits, LCMS
Foundation gift planning and trust services, and the Group Purchasing Agreement
program.
We thank God for the work these organizations have done in the CNH District and look forward
to more encouraging stories of partnerships in the future.
