Mike Mancini Retires After Three Decades of Faithful Service at Redeemer, Redwood City

After nearly 30 years of dedicated ministry, Mike Mancini will retire as principal of Redeemer Lutheran School on June 5, concluding a remarkable journey that has shaped generations of students and left a lasting imprint on the school community.

Mancini’s path to educational ministry was anything but conventional. Raised in a Catholic family and educated in Catholic schools, he discovered early success on the football field. His athletic talent led him to Fresno State University, where he played as a punter. While the university’s strong football program was appealing, Mancini often notes that his decision was also influenced by the presence of his future wife, Lisa.

Following his graduation in 1986, Mancini briefly pursued a professional football career. He signed with the San Francisco 49ers and went on to spend time with both the Detroit Lions and the Green Bay Packers. Though his time in the NFL was short-lived, it marked an important chapter in a life defined by adaptability and purpose.

After stepping away from professional football, Mancini worked a variety of jobs—from banking to retail to driving a delivery truck—before finding his calling in education. In 1990, he began coaching football at Sequoia High School in Redwood City, an experience that inspired him to return to school and earn his teaching credential.

That decision ultimately led him to Redeemer in 1996, where he began teaching eighth grade. His leadership abilities and heart for students quickly became evident, and in 2003 he was called to serve as principal—a role he has faithfully carried out ever since.

Reflecting on his years at Redeemer, Mancini points not to programs or accomplishments, but to people. “It all revolves around relationships,” he shares. “I’ve loved being a part of kids’ lives and hope I’ve had some small part in who they’ve become.” He often describes his leadership approach simply: he wanted to be the kind of principal he himself never had.

Over the years, Mancini says he has learned as much from his students as they have from him—especially lessons in listening and the power of forgiveness. When asked about his legacy, he redirects the focus to faith: “It’s about how God called me into this ministry, giving me the opportunity to share Christ with students.

Paul Schult, Executive Director at Redeemer, reflects on Mancini’s impact: “Mike has been a faithful, dynamic, and loving leader for Redeemer school as teacher and principal for 30 years. He leaves a legacy that is marked by loving relationships, making school memorable and fun, and personal sacrifice. Mike is a committed disciple of Jesus, an active member of the church, a good friend to many, an supportive citizen of Redwood City, and big fan of Lake Tahoe! Because of his leadership, a generation of students has experienced a Christian environment where they were truly known, loved, and respected.”

As he looks ahead to retirement, Mancini says what he will miss most is the daily interaction with students—the spontaneous conversations, shared laughter, and the opportunity to walk alongside young people in their formative years.

Though stepping away from full-time leadership, Mancini does not plan to step away entirely. He hopes to remain involved at Redeemer through coaching, leading the school’s annual Washington, D.C. trip, and offering support wherever needed. Retirement will also bring new opportunities for rest and renewal, including travel, enjoying his cabin at Lake Tahoe, and time on the golf course with Lisa.

Mike Mancini’s legacy at Redeemer Lutheran School is one of faithful service, Christ-centered leadership, and enduring relationships. His influence will continue to be felt in the lives of students, families, and colleagues for years to come.
