Cross Academy (Our Savior, Aiea) Students Soar at Science Symposium

ree

The 4th Annual Honua Scholars Proposal Competition fosters new ideas that could positively impact the Hawaiian community through STEM. This year, they invited proposals exploring “Ke Ola Pono: The Science of Wellbeing,” integrating Pacific Island wisdom with STEM to advance health, sustainability, and innovation in areas like farming, healthcare, and education. Six students in 5th-8th grade from Cross Academy placed in the top 3 with their written, science or technology proposal.

Students who submitted written proposals were also invited to a "Proposal Pitch Competition" in-person at the Honua Scholars 2025 Laulima Symposium on November 15th, 2025 at Windward Community College (WCC). They only had about 2 minutes to share their idea, a little nerve-racking for sure!

What a great experience students, who received very positive feedback from judges and volunteers at the event. Everyone really enjoyed the students' enthusiasm and creative approaches to problem-solving real issues.

Students and families also got to help a university lab collect environmental samples around WCC campus to potentially isolate "Non-Tuberculosis Mycobacterium" (that still cause lung disease).

Mahalo nui loa to all the parents, grandparents, other family members, teachers, and staff who support these students throughout all their activities and help make everything possible.
