CHURCH OR SCHOOL GOVERNANCE & BOARD TRAINING
In a recent survey, almost two-thirds of CNH congregation respondents stated that their leaders do not have a clear understanding of their church’s governance and three-fourths stated that they do not receive regular board training. The CNH District is available to help with governance and board training. This can involve conducting a governance assessment, presentation on church governance in general or how to implement Policy Governance, and board training on a variety of specific topics such as Congregational Linkage, Board Holism, Policy Development, Staff Monitoring, and Organizational Structure.
Here are the two most common models of governance in our Lutheran churches.

The Abdon Model of governance refers to a structure where the board plays an active role in both governance and management of an organization. The Abdon Model, sometimes known as the church council model blends governance and operational functions. The council forms several boards who then focus on various ministries and operational tasks of the organization.
Policy Governance is a framework for organizational governance developed by John Carver designed to help boards effectively govern organizations by clearly defining roles, responsibilities, and boundaries between the board and management. It is a structured approach that emphasizes the board's focus on the strategic long-term vision, and the outcomes or "ends" (goals) the organization is trying to achieve, rthan than on operational details or short-term issues. This is delegated to the head pastor or chief administrator, who is held accountable for the "means" or how the "ends" (goals) are achieved.
