President Newton's Bible Studies

Bible Study Series #1:  A NEW DAY

Three Bible Study/Discussions on our mission in the post-churched context

The Three Studies are:

1. The World Around Us: The Post-Churched Society
2. Our Role in that World: Called as Priests
3. Our Future Ministry: We are here for those who aren't here yet

These studies are based on presentations by Dr. Robert Newton, as well as some ideas from Dr. Paul Borden and Dr. Aubrey Malphurs.

These studies are expansions of presentations/discussions that were developed for St. John's Lutheran Church in Napa, CA, by Rev. Michael Schmid, as part of their 100th Anniversary Strategic Planning Process Forward in Faith. The discussions have been very fruitful and it has been exciting to see "missional" eyes opening up as we seek the Lord's leading in this new day of ministry.

A few notes on the Bible Studies

  • These studies are prepared as PowerPoint presentations with a handout for each participant. They can also be conducted with only the handouts.
  • The discussion questions are in bold blue letters. Please try to facilitate and encourage the discussion. It is important to verbalize and process what for some people, are entirely new ways of thinking about their world, their church, and themselves.
  • The PowerPoint presentation notes provide some comments for the leader. The text in bold provides suggested comments by the leader. The text in italics provides instructions.
  • The notes are also printed out in the document: "Leader's Notes"

May God bless your discussions!

Making the Bible Yours - A Six-Week Bible Study

Bible Study Series #2, MAKING THE BIBLE YOURS, as presented at the Council of Presidents meeting in September 2007.  The target group for this study is:

·         the 40% who sit in church on any given Sunday and are unable to competently navigate through Scripture.

·         the new believer, one who has just completed the pastor's class or new member class and doesn't know what's next.

·         the one who simply wants more knowledge of the Book but isn't looking for a conversion.

·         grammar school, high school, and college age students attending Christian schools and need to be taught navigational tools for practical Bible study.

·         young people in the youth program who, for example, have never been taught the books of the Bible.

·         anyone wanting to be equipped as a guide to help another person(s) journey through the Bible.

·         anyone wanting to pass on to others a study for personal use.

Ultimately, the study is written to help connect people with Jesus.  The study has been piloted within four LCMS churches with very encouraging results.
