God's Mission is GOD'S Mission
Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Because all of our ministries in the CNH District and throughout Synod these days are finding themselves existing as mission outposts, I would like to review with you what I see Scripture as saying is the essence of missions.
Five main themes emerge from the Bible. We will want to look at these over the next five e- newsletters. But, in summary, they are:
- The Kingdom and the mission of it coming into the world belong solely to God
- God entrusts the stewardship of His Kingdom to us, the crown of His creation
- God extends His Kingdom into the world through His Church--His servant community
- God's Kingdom is constantly opposed by Satan, the world, and our flesh
- God's Kingdom comes. This reality is our (the Church's) hope
J. Hudson Taylor, a revered 19th century missionary to China is quoted as saying, "God's work, done God's way, will never lack God's resources."
No better thoughts can be ours in shaping our work together as Mission Action Councils. Our beginning, then, must be to fix firmly the Biblical foundation (God's way) upon which His mission will be worked through His people of the CNH District.
Our hearts' desire is perfectly expressed in our corporate prayer every Sunday morning: "Thy Kingdom come." Luther wrote regarding this petition of the Lord's Prayer, What is the kingdom of God? Answer: Simply what we learned in the Creed, namely, that God sent His Son, Christ our Lord, into the world to redeem and deliver us from the power of the devil and to bring us to Himself and rule us as a king of righteousness, life, and salvation against sin, death, and an evil conscience. To this end he also gave His Holy Spirit to teach us this though His holy word and to enlighten and strengthen us in faith by his power (LC, Lord's Prayer). | Greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus!
Welcome to "IN TOUCH", the new CNH District e- newsletter.
Because the leaders of our District need to stay informed and because we have much to learn in ministry from one another, our intent is to produce a weekly e-newsletter that will share the best of what the Lord is doing in the district...and beyond.
Please feel free to forward any useful e- newsletter articles to a friend or parishioner. And, as always, your comments are most welcome!
If you have a story, event, or other newsworthy information that you want to have included in a future edition of this e-newsletter, email articles and photos to newsletter@cnh- lcms.org.
In Christ,
Rev. Ed Krueger and Debbie Oatman, e- newsletter co-editors

| Tom Hurley Installed as Pastoral Deacon at Zion, San Francisco |
|
On Sunday, Feb. 27th, Tom Hurley was installed as "Pastoral Deacon", an enhancement of the public ministry of Zion Lutheran Church. The Rev. Dr. Robert Newton, President, California-Nevada- Hawaii District of the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod, certified his readiness and authorized his installation.
Many know Tom as "Mr. West Coast Church Supply". He has been a member of Zion for more than 25 years, and had previously served in the congregation as Chairman of the Board for Education, and Chairman of the Board of Elders, as well as Worship Assistant. He is married to Marcia, also very active at Zion, and has two grown children, Brian and Leslie. Greetings were received from President Newton, MC Ed Krueger, and local pastor, David Stechholz of West Portal Lutheran.

| Rev. Luis Alvarado installed in Napa |
|
Luis Alvarado was installed on Saturday, February 12, as Hispanic Ministry Pastor and Spanish Language Missionary at St. John's Lutheran Church in Napa. Luis will be working with the people of Inglesia Cristiana de la Comunidad, an Hispanic congregation that has been worshiping at the site of the former Faith Lutheran Church, now part of St. John's. Luis had been installed as pastor of Inglesia Cristiana del Comunidad by the people of that congregation on January 23.
The installation is the next step in a partnership between St. John's Lutheran Church, Inglesia Cristiana de la Comunidad, and the CNH district.

| Mission Action Councils' Orientation Workshop Produces High Energy for the Missional Task |
|
Members of the newly formed Mission Action Councils met for an orientation meeting in Sacramento on March 4-6, 2005, in conjunction with the Church Extension Fund Conference. The purpose of the orientation was to help the representatives from each circuit learn the history of mission in the CNH District, become acquainted with some of the "hot spots" for future mission work, and to organize themselves for their work in the district.
The MACs are comprised of a rostered and a lay member from each circuit plus include, as advisory members, a representative from CEF, LWML, and the Mission Counselor. The MACs are aligned in some conformity with the regions of the district: south, pacific or Bay area, and north. In addition, Hawaii and the Sierra/Nevada areas each have formed their own MAC.
The MACs are assuming the responsibility of the Partner Ministries Committee: to review missions and prioritize grant applications. Each MAC will distribute a portion of the overall mission budget to those mission planting situations that they believe fits within the granting guidelines. The MACs will present an opportunity for our District churches and schools to gain more ownership of the mission process.
